Marble Inlay Installation requires a specialized technical approach to ensure that the precision achieved at the factory is maintained during on-site assembly. This manual provides architects and contractors with the critical specifications for substrate preparation, bonding, and final surface treatment of Art Inlay’s bespoke stone masterpieces.
Substrate Preparation: The Foundation of Precision
The integrity of a luxury stone inlay is entirely dependent on the stability of the substrate. For flooring installations, the sub-floor must be fully cured, structurally sound, and level to within ±2mm across the entire installation area. We recommend a high-strength, low-shrinkage cementitious screed. If installing our lightweight honeycomb-backed panels on vertical surfaces, the structural wall must be cleared of all debris and primed with a high-bond agent to ensure the mechanical and chemical adhesion of the stone assembly.

Bonding and Adhesive Specifications
Natural stone is reactive to moisture and chemical composition in standard mortars. For Art Inlay commissions, we mandate the use of high-performance, rapid-setting white thin-set mortars specifically formulated for natural stone. Utilizing a gray mortar can cause ‘ghosting’ or mineral staining in light-colored marbles like Thassos or Statuario. The adhesive should be applied using the back-buttering method to ensure 100% coverage, eliminating air pockets that could lead to stone fracture under high-traffic loads.
Joint Management and Grout-Free Aesthetics
The hallmark of an Art Inlay project is the monolithic, ‘zero-grout’ appearance. Our segments are waterjet-cut to a ±0.1mm tolerance, designed to be dry-fitted tightly. During installation, use a high-grade, color-matched stone epoxy for the micro-joints rather than standard sanded grout. Once the epoxy has cured, the entire surface should be lightly honed or polished in situ to remove any minor height variations (lippage), resulting in a perfectly planar architectural surface.

Post-Installation Protection and Sealing
Immediately following the final polish and cleaning, the stone must be protected from construction debris. We specify the application of a high-quality penetrative (impregnating) sealer. Unlike topical sealers, penetrative agents bond within the stone’s pores, providing a hydrophobic barrier against staining while allowing the mineral to breathe. This is particularly critical in Harbin-standard projects where the stone is exposed to varied environmental conditions. Avoid using acidic cleaners during the post-installation cleanup, as these will etch the marble surface.
Contractor Checklist for Success:
- Leveling: Substrate must be level to ±2mm.
- Adhesive: White, rapid-set stone mortar; 100% back-butter coverage.
- Alignment: Follow the factory-provided ‘Stone-Map’ indexing.
- Finishing: Use color-matched epoxy; site-polish to remove lippage.
