What Is Pietre Dure?
Pietre dure (Italian for “hard stones”) is the centuries-old craft of forming pictorial images from precisely cut and fitted pieces of coloured stone. Every petal, leaf, feather, and shadow is a separate piece of marble, onyx, lapis, malachite, or jasper — chosen for its natural colour and grain, then assembled into a seamless composition.
Perfected in Renaissance Florence, it remains one of the most demanding disciplines in architectural stonework. Art Inlay produces pietre dure panels, tabletops, floor medallions, and wall art to bespoke designs, pairing traditional hand craftsmanship with modern waterjet precision.

Stones & Technique
Colour comes from the stone itself, never from dye or paint. We work with a broad natural palette:
- Marble & onyx: Calacatta, Statuario, Nero Marquina, Verde Alpi, Giallo Siena, honey and green onyx.
- Semi-precious: lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper, tiger’s eye, mother of pearl on request.
- Cut method: waterjet roughing to 0.2mm, finished by hand for the tightest joints.
- Thickness: 10–20mm panels on stabilised backing for transport and installation.

How a Pietre Dure Panel Is Made
Pietre dure is the most labour-intensive technique we offer. Every piece follows the same disciplined sequence.
- Artwork & cartoon — the design becomes a full-size cartoon, every stone piece mapped and a material chosen per colour zone.
- Stone selection — slabs chosen for hue and grain direction so the veining works with the image.
- Waterjet & hand cutting — pieces roughed by waterjet, refined by hand so edges meet with no visible gap.
- Assembly — fitted like marquetry, bonded, and backed for stability.
- Finishing — ground flat and polished or honed to reveal full depth of colour.
- Packaging & export — crated with installation drawings; DDP shipping worldwide.

What is the difference between pietre dure and marble inlay?
Marble inlay covers all stone-into-stone work, including geometric borders. Pietre dure is the pictorial branch — representational imagery such as flowers, birds, and landscapes built from individually selected stones. It is the most refined form of inlay.
Can you work from my own artwork or design?
Yes. We regularly translate client artwork, paintings, logos, and heraldic devices into stone. If no artwork exists, our design team develops a composition from your references and dimensions.
What stones can be used?
Any natural marble or onyx, plus semi-precious materials such as lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper, and mother of pearl. Colour always comes from the stone itself.
How long does a commission take?
Typically 10–14 weeks from design approval, depending on size, number of stone pieces, and material sourcing.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship factory direct to over 40 countries, with DDP shipping to the US, EU, UK, and Gulf markets, including export documentation and installation drawings.
