The brief

What this project had to solve

Brass fillets inlaid flush with Nero Portoro, lapped so the metal and stone read as one surface.

The commission

Grand Luxury Villa, Wuhan in detail

This grand Wuhan villa runs dark marble corridors inlaid with brass, through the full reception sequence. The brief was for metal and stone to read as one surface — no raised strip, no visible seam where the brass meets the Nero Portoro.

Metal in stone is a tolerance game: brass and stone move differently with heat, so the channels were cut to the same ±0.1mm as the stone, the fillets set flush, and the whole surface lapped until the line work sits in the same plane as the marble. The panels were dry-assembled and photographed before crating.

Installed, the corridors read as a single dark composition stitched with fine brass lines — the metal catching the light exactly where the drawing intended.

The brass was cut and set in the same waterjet file as the stone, so the two materials meet on a shared edge rather than a filled gap. A slight crowned lap keeps the metal fractionally proud at the polished fields, so the line catches the light without tripping the eye.

How we make it

From drawing to crating

01

Full-size drawing

The pattern is drawn 1:1 on the atelier floor before any stone is cut, so proportions are settled at the scale you will walk on.

02

Stone selection

Blocks and slabs are chosen against the drawing, vein by vein, and photographed for your approval.

03

Waterjet cutting

Multi-axis waterjet cuts every piece direct from the approved CAD file, held to ±0.1mm across the whole figure.

04

Dry assembly & crating

The composition is assembled, inspected and numbered on the factory floor, then crated with a setting plan.
