Free Specification Guide for Marble Inlay
Everything a marble inlay specification needs — setting-out, stone schedule, thickness, finishes, underfloor heating, movement joints, wet zones and approvals — written for the people who have to build it.

Specify inlay early and the installation is calm. The detail that decides whether a bespoke floor fits first time is almost all settled at the drawing stage: the setting-out, the stone schedule, the thickness, and how the floor meets walls, stairs and services. This guide collects those decisions in one place.
The setting-out drawing comes first. Mark the room's axis, the door centre-lines and the stair, then size the borders and the field so the pattern meets every wall on a full unit rather than a cut. Reserve the movement joints for the pattern lines, and set the medallion so it centres on the room rather than the furniture.
Stone, thickness and finish follow from that drawing. We hold 18mm structural stone as standard and step up to 20mm in heavy-traffic lanes, specifying polished fields for depth and honed or leathered walking surfaces for grip. Every colour in the pattern is scheduled to an exact marble and finish, and approved against the drawing before a single piece is cut.
To it we add the services the floor has to live with: underfloor heating, movement and expansion joints, wet-zone falls and sealing, and the way the inlay meets stone thresholds, stair nosings and brass trims. These are engineered into the cut file, then confirmed in writing, so nothing is left to the site to improvise.
It is written for architects, designers and contractors — people who need numbers, not adjectives. Use it as a template for your specification, or send us your drawing and we will return a cut plan, a material study and an itemised quotation within three working days.
Numbers that matter
Axis, borders and field sizes marked so the pattern aligns with walls, doors and stairs
Exact marbles for each colour in the pattern, with finish
18mm structural stone standard, 20mm for heavy traffic
Polished, honed, brushed or leathered — specified per zone
Underfloor heating and movement joints planned into the cut file
Sign-off on the full-size drawing and the dry-assembled floor
From drawing to crating
Full-size drawing
The pattern is drawn 1:1 on the atelier floor before any stone is cut, so proportions are settled at the scale you will walk on.
Stone selection
Blocks and slabs are chosen against the drawing, vein by vein, and photographed for your approval.
Waterjet cutting
Multi-axis waterjet cuts every piece direct from the approved CAD file, held to ±0.1mm across the whole figure.
Dry assembly & crating
The composition is assembled, inspected and numbered on the factory floor, then crated with a setting plan.
Answered for specifiers
As early as the general arrangement — before the substrate is built, so thickness, falls and movement joints can be planned into the structure.
Yes — stone mineralogy, cutting tolerances, adhesive recommendations and installation method, on request.
Yes. Send it and we will mark it up with the points that matter for inlay and return it with the quote.
