Most people who sell “custom marble inlay” do not make it. They take your order, farm the cutting to a workshop and mark it up. That is not always wrong — but you should know which one you are buying from.
Eight questions that reveal the truth
- Can I see the factory? A real maker shows the drawing floor, the waterjet hall and the fitting benches.
- Will you dry-assemble my commission and photograph it before shipping? This is the single best proof of quality — and it protects you.
- What tolerance do you cut to? ±0.1mm is the professional answer; vagueness is a warning.
- Who draws the cut plan? It should be the maker, at full size (1:1), not a reseller.
- How do you choose stone? Against your drawing, vein by vein — not from a sample board.
- What happens on site? Numbered panels, a setting plan and technical support should come as standard.
- Can you show delivered projects? Real photography from site, not renders.
- Is the quote itemised? Stone, cutting, assembly and crating priced separately.
Red flags
- One lump-sum price with no breakdown.
- No factory — only a showroom or a website.
- Renders instead of photographs of installed work.
- No dry-assembly or approval step before shipping.
