If you have been quoted wildly different numbers for the same marble inlay floor, the problem is not the suppliers — it is the brief. Cost is not a single number; it is the sum of four decisions. Understand them and you can forecast a project before anyone lifts a slab.
The four drivers
- Stone. Crema Marfil is economical; Calacatta, Statuario and semi-precious stones (lapis, malachite, onyx) are not. Stone can move a price by a factor of three on its own.
- Pattern complexity. Piece count and curvature drive cutting and hand-fitting time. A radial medallion with 200 pieces is a different job from a book-matched border with 2,000.
- Area. The same pattern scaled across 200 m² costs more per m² to install but less per pattern unit. Very small pieces carry the highest cost per m².
- Destination. Crating, insurance and freight follow the site, not the drawing.

Every commission is priced individually, but these bands help you plan. Figures are per square metre of finished inlay, ex-works:

How to reduce cost without losing quality
- Keep the pattern, change the stone: an economical body with a semi-precious accent reads rich for less.
- Specify borders and fields so cuts fall on whole pieces, not slivers.
- Decide early — late changes are the most expensive line item in any project.
