Pietre dure — literally "hardstone" — is the art of building a picture from cut pieces of semi-precious stone. Each feather, petal or scroll is its own piece of lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper, agate or onyx, chosen for the vein that will read as shadow or plumage. Rough-cut on the waterjet, then closed by hand at the bench, a single panel can hold several thousand pieces.
Pietre dure is painting with stone. Every piece is selected for its colour and figure before it is cut, so the picture emerges from the natural veining of the hardstone rather than from a printed pattern. It is the slowest and most exclusive form of inlay we make, reserved for wall panels, feature floors and objects where the eye comes close.
Landscapes, birds, animals, still-lifes and coats of arms are all possible. The technique carries the pictorial detail that ordinary marble inlay cannot — a branch, a bloom or a crest rendered in stone with the depth of a painting but the permanence of masonry.
Panels are built on backing boards in the atelier, photographed section by section for sign-off and shipped framed and crated. Installed, the surface reads as a painting that happens to be stone, and it can sit flush into a floor, a wall or a vanity as part of a single matched specification.
Pietre dure is normally specified for the focal points of a project: an entrance wall, a chapel or gallery panel, a framed cartouche, or a table top. Because the hardstones are cut thin and fitted by hand, it is also the form of inlay that ages most beautifully — colour and figure are inherent to the stone, not applied.
