The brief

What this project had to solve

Eleven pictorial panels fitted to a 0.8mm joint — each bird and branch hand-closed at the bench.

The commission

Private Residence, Cambodia in detail

This Cambodian residence combines landing medallions and continuous borders through the formal rooms with eleven pietre dure panels, each a pictorial composition of birds and branches hand-fitted to a 0.8mm joint.

The medallions and borders in Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina were cut to ±0.1mm; the pietre dure panels were rough-cut on the waterjet and then closed by hand at the bench, photographed section by section for approval.

Installed, the landing medallions, running borders and eleven hand-fitted panels give the formal rooms a single, rare level of finish — the panels reading as paintings that happen to be stone.

Each pietre dure panel was supplied framed, so it could be handled and set without touching the face. The eleven panels were matched as a set from one hardstone selection, so the birds read as a series rather than eleven separate pictures.

How we make it

From drawing to crating

01

Full-size drawing

The pattern is drawn 1:1 on the atelier floor before any stone is cut, so proportions are settled at the scale you will walk on.

02

Stone selection

Blocks and slabs are chosen against the drawing, vein by vein, and photographed for your approval.

03

Waterjet cutting

Multi-axis waterjet cuts every piece direct from the approved CAD file, held to ±0.1mm across the whole figure.

04

Dry assembly & crating

The composition is assembled, inspected and numbered on the factory floor, then crated with a setting plan.
