What this project had to solve
The entrance medallion had to close on a single centre across three different floor levels.
Delivered for a classical Shanghai villa: pietre dure ornamentation across the living hall, lobby and corridors — with an entrance medallion that closes on a single centre across three floor levels.
Private Villa, Shanghai in detail
This classical Shanghai villa called for pietre dure ornamentation across the living hall, lobby and corridors, tied to a single entrance medallion. The medallion had to close on one centre across three different floor levels, so the pattern was set out from a single axis and every level was cut from the same full-size drawing.
We selected the hardstones and marbles against the drawing — Crema Marfil, Nero Marquina and Verde Alpi, with brass fillets for the fine lines — cut each piece on the waterjet to ±0.1mm, and hand-closed the pietre dure elements at the bench to a 0.8mm joint.
The completed floor was dry-assembled, photographed for approval and crated with a numbered setting plan. Installed, the medallion reads as one piece from the gallery above, and the ground floor carries a single continuous composition from the threshold to the corridors.
The stone was selected from the same block family so the medallion, borders and field read as one palette. Installed, the floor has stayed flat and quiet through years of use — the real test of an inlaid surface — and the brass fillets have not lifted from the marble.
From drawing to crating
Full-size drawing
The pattern is drawn 1:1 on the atelier floor before any stone is cut, so proportions are settled at the scale you will walk on.
Stone selection
Blocks and slabs are chosen against the drawing, vein by vein, and photographed for your approval.
Waterjet cutting
Multi-axis waterjet cuts every piece direct from the approved CAD file, held to ±0.1mm across the whole figure.
Dry assembly & crating
The composition is assembled, inspected and numbered on the factory floor, then crated with a setting plan.
