Category: Design & Inspiration

Design inspiration for custom marble inlay — patterns, borders, medallions and pietre dure, and how architects and designers use stone inlay to define a room. From geometric fields and floral runners to book-matched walls and entrance medallions, these are compositions drawn to the architecture rather than applied to it.
A good inlaid floor is set out from the room itself: the axis of the entrance door, the line of the stair, the point where the chandelier hangs. Borders are sized so the field tiles out in whole units, and the medallion is centred on the space rather than the furniture. That is why the same pattern can read as calm in a hall and rich in a ballroom — it is scaled to the room, not copied from a sample board.
Colour contrast decides how a floor reads: a dark stone on a light ground draws the eye to a medallion, while tone-on-tone veining keeps the room quiet. Pattern density decides the mood and the budget — a simple geometry is faster to cut, a dense floral field or figurative pietre dure carries far more work.
Use these ideas as a starting point. See the collections for the techniques, more projects for how they were built, or begin a commission.
